Before running website updates, make sure you have done the following (including WordPress Core, plugins, and/or themes):

  1. Have a current backup of your website (current meaning that if you had to use that backup today, you wouldn’t lose anything). You can do this by navigating to UpdraftPlus under “Settings” and checking to see the last backup date.
  2. If you’re updating a plugin, you want to make sure that the new plugin version is compatible with your WordPress version.
  3. If you’re updating a theme and you have made changes to colors, fonts, layout, etc, double that running a theme update won’t overwrite these changes (hint: you should have either a child theme or used the built-in customizer).
